SERF Grant Summary Fall 2005

SERF awarded over $ 18,000 in enrichment and mini grants during its Fall 2005 grant cycle.  Enrichment grants are over $750 and mini grants are less than $750.

Mini Grants Fall 2005

 

Human Body Study -- ECMS

Using mannequins purchased through this grant, students in art class will study how the body moves as well as placement and proportion of human body features.  (S. Greenway)

Sericulture Ecology --ECMS

Sixth grade science students will create a worm composting bin in conjunction with studies of decomposition, ecology of worms, and environmental responsibility. (M. Lafond)

Calculators in the Classroom – ECMS

Calculator kits will be purchased to enhance teaching of math reasoning skills. (J.P. Mann)

Geometry:  Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Exploration –ECMS

 hands-on visualization opportunity to identify cubes, prisms, spheres and pyramids.(M. Shenton, J.P. Mann, B. Deneen)

Reading Fluency and Comprehension Development – Haynes

Materials will be purchased to form a complete set of Read Naturally materials.  These materials are designed to boost reading fluency by providing students with multiple and varied practice opportunities during reading workshop and intervention tutorials.  (K. Swain, C. Maloney)

Native Americans – Pat and Present –Noyes

This grant will enhance the second grade study of Native Americans through the purchase of nonfiction texts and reference books.  Texts will provide children of varied reading abilities access to research materials needed for ongoing projects and activities.  (B.D. Hedin)

Reading A-Z – Noyes

Reading A-Z.com  is an online reading program which offers a large pool of  printable reading materials for guided reading, phonemic awareness, reading comprehensions and fluency.  Materials will be downloaded to expand the resources of the Learning Center.  (J. O’Connor, E. Levoy. J. Lofgren)

Enrichment Grants – Fall 2005

Massachusetts, United States and World Desk Maps – District-wide

The social studies curriculum specialist will purchase laminated, double-sided desk maps for use by all students in grades 3-5 as part of the grade-specific social studies curriculum.  (J. Hundley)

World Map Playground Kit – ECMS

A map of the world will be painted outside on the asphalt at ECMS. Social studies lessons will be developed for each grade using the map as a kinesthetic learning tool.(M. Perry)

Intermediate Flash Course – LSRHS

A faculty member of the art department will enroll in a Flash animation course at Massachusetts College of Art and use the information and skills gained to develop an animation course at LSRHS.  (S. Justice)

The Stalin Project – LSRHS

This grant will include the development of an interactive web site and teacher source book for use in the study of European history and dictators.  The goal of the project is to help teachers educate students about Stalin as a historical figure and also as an example of a totalitarian leader.  The website and source book will help students and teachers understand Stalin and the vital lessons to be learned from his reign.  This project will supplement a larger grant from the National Endowment for Humanities and will enjoy national distribution.  (D.
