Buddy Gardening

To build community and science awareness through a “Buddy” gardening program which teams Preschoolers and one 5th grade class in creating a vegetable and flower garden. (E. Liv, C. Fitzpatrick)

“Habitat” Integration

Integration of Technology/Engineering Standards across Curriculum

To develop and tailor 12 technology/engineering lessons and integrate them into the existing K-5 curriculum to meet new state standards and respond to MCAS questions.

Enrichment Grants - Spring

District-wide Guided Reading Initiative

To expand the leveled book collection at each elementary school, which SERF funded last year, in order to challenge and meet the needs of intermediate grade readers. The grant also provides staff development opportunities for upper elementary grade teachers.

Mexico: Understanding Mexican Culture Through Its Marketplaces and Folktales

To develop a curriculum guide on Mexico for use by all second grade teachers to insure system wide consistency of teaching themes and content. The guide, which will feature lesson plans and an annotated bibliography, will include discussion of economic and civic goals as required by the Massachusetts State Frameworks. (J. Hundley, B. Shared Inquiry Approach to Literature
through the use of Junior Great Books

To purchase materials to incorporate the Junior Great Books Method of Shared Inquiry into first and second grade classrooms at one elementary school. Junior Great Books are used to teach critical literacy skills including comprehension, speaking, listening and writing. (A. Connelley, J. Hutchinson, C. Kuo, A. Manuel)

Ancient China: What is left to see?

To create a Powerpoint presentation for middle school teachers to use in teaching the 7th grade unit on China. The presentation will include recent photographs of ancient historic and religious sites in present day China and will feature salient notes and speaking points. (M. Mahoney, N. Lewis)

Walking Tour of ECMS Library Media Center

To create a taped walking tour of the ECMS Library Media Center that will provide new students with an introduction to the facility and its resources. (D. Lane)

Facing History and Ourselves Summer Institute

To fund one high school history teacher’s participation in a six-day course to study a new teaching methodology that connects history to moral questions. The new approach encourages students to look critically at their choices and how those choices are reflected in society. (L. Olsson)

Collaborative Peer Observation Workshop

To hire a consultant to train an established professional development group of high school teachers to enhance their methods of peer observation and discussion. The workshop will enable these educators to observe each other in the classroom and provide constructive feedback. (D. Conti, R. Berger, S. Parker)

Spelling with Success

To develop a Spelling with Success Resource Book for 2nd and 3rd grade teachers to enhance spelling instruction. The new instruction method uses a multi-sensory format based on the student’s developmental level and teaches new ways of understanding language construction. (M. Taylor, L. Joseffer, J. Binus, L.
